Redesign

Glossary

Redesign

Redesign is a term for updating the design of existing products, with the aim of gradually improving the utility value for the user.

In the 1980s, the “Alchimia” group of designers used redesigns in order to criticise the design philosophy behind functionalism. Alongside everyday objects (banal design), Alessandro Mendini and other Italian product designers redesigned and parodied famous works of modern industrial design. For example, Mendini toyed with icons such as the Thonet stool and Marcel Breuer’s “Wassily Chair”, adorning them with colourful patterns and objects.
