Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm / Ulm School of Design

Glossary

Ulm School of Design

The Ulm School of Design was an international school which had an important influence on the teaching, research, and development of product design.

It existed from 1953 to 1968, and initially followed directly the Bauhaus tradition. In the course of Germany’s “economic miracle”, the school increasingly orientated itself towards science and the technology of mass production, cooperating with industry. Its design projects focused on the rational industrial design of mass-produced goods intended for use in daily life and for multiple applications. To this day, the pedagogic concept (the Ulm model) of the school continues to influence the training of product designers.
