Anglepoise

The “Anglepoise tasklight 1933/34” is a work lamp invented around 1930 by the English car engineer, George Carwardine (1887–1948).

The industrial designer thus popularised the principle of a sprung lamp which can be moved in all directions. In order to construct a lamp for the work area, he developed a new design, inspired by the anatomy of the human arm: he attached the lamp shade to a long swivel arm at whose joints springs were attached in order to create balance through the interplay of tension and counter-tension. The anglepoise is certainly the most frequently imitated desk lamp, and is considered a classic of product design.
