The German word “Gestaltung” describes the process through which a person takes a thing (object, topic, structure, etc.) and through his own actions makes it his own, changes it, and makes it usable.
Through conscious manipulation, the person engaged in “Gestaltung” influences his environment in order to change it in a certain way. In industrial design, the term describes the creative process through which a product is given its external, perceivable form, its appearance. The object of the “Gestaltung” process is here also described as a “Gestaltung” (the word is here used as a noun), as something that has been shaped.
